Barbour Way of Life: The Soul of The Tan Hill Inn

Barbour Way of Life: The Soul of The Tan Hill Inn case study

By GAIN Creative Studios

We wanted to tell the story of Britain’s highest pub - Tan Hill Inn - a place shaped by weather, resilience, and the people who pass through its doors. A story of connection born from the wild of the outdoors, and the warmth inside Tan Hill Inn that only exists when the middle of nowhere becomes a meeting point. The wind pushes back, the road disappears, the moorland stretches forever. But inside, something shifts. The storm becomes background noise, faces become friends and the highest pub in Britain starts to feel like the heart of it.

The Barbour Way of Life series celebrates people across Britain who live and embody what Barbour stands for - a slower, more thoughtful way of life that values community, craftsmanship, and the outdoors. Each short film we create (around 5–10 minutes) tells a genuine, unscripted story of someone whose passion, work, and/or lifestyle reflects this spirit.

In this episode, we follow the Tan Hill Inn and the people who bring it to life, Andrew, the owner who rebuilt it from the brink of closure, the staff who battle every storm, the travellers who arrive tired, windswept, or completely unprepared,

and the locals who know that up here, nothing happens without community.

Community is the heartbeat here. Known lovingly as ‘The Tan Hillers’, staff, locals and visitors alike, share more than a drink, they share the experience of being pushed together by the elements. When the snow comes in sideways, when the pub is snowed in for a night, or two, or twelve, strangers do not stay strangers for long. Friendship becomes part of the landscape.

It is a grounded, reflective episode. No embellishments. Just an honest story about a pub that should not logically exist, and the community that keeps it thriving, season after season.
